“Trash” at Perelman Performing Arts Center
3.5 out of 5 stars
"Trash" tells a simple story in an interestingly complex way. Written by its two lead performers, both deaf, the plot about feuding roommates becomes secondary to powerful (if not always successful) efforts to make the play resonate equally for deaf and hearing audiences. Developments emerge via sign language, whiteboard scribblings, supertitles and -- most inventively -- a character who's ostensibly a jukebox but provides spoken translation when fed cash. Some confusion persists nevertheless, including around the ending, determined by audience vote. But credit creator/actors James Caverly and Andrew Morill for relatable performances and human jukebox Chris Ogren for indefatigable versatility. — Adam Z. Horvath
