“The Queen of Versailles” at St. James Theatre
1 out of 5 stars
I’ll say this much for “Queen of Versailles”: It makes “Tammy Faye,” last season’s bomb of a musical, look like a work of genius. OK, a slight exaggeration, but this Stephen Schwartz show, about a $100 million mansion that’s one woman’s misguided fantasy, disappoints on many levels. Begin with the milquetoast score. Add in the all-over-the-place storytelling (how many flashback-to-gilded France sequences do we need?). Then, package it with a largely underwhelming cast – and that surprisingly includes Kristen Chenoweth in the lead role. And what’s the point? That conspicuous consumption is, well, conspicuous? (What a revelation!) In short: No, queen. 1 out of 5 stars. — Charles Passy
