“You Got Older” at the Cherry Lane Theatre

4 out of 5 stars

There are two ways to consider Clare Barron’s “You Got Older”: Either it’s a play with true-to-life characters but not much of a story to tell – or it’s a play where the “story” is in the tiny details of how those people live. Here we have a daughter (the smart, engaging Alia Shawkat) at a crossroads and a father (the warm, subtly comical Peter Friedman) who’s confronting his mortality. Other characters emerge in jumbled fashion, but the play centers on the father and daughter and what their bond says about life in all its fragile beauty. We get older, indeed. — Charles Passy
